As you get older, it becomes increasingly important to stay active. Regular exercise has numerous health benefits, from improving your heart and lung function to strengthening your muscles and bones. It also helps you maintain a healthy weight, increase your energy levels and keep your mind sharp. In this blog, Rémon Koetje, Lifestyle coach and trainer at Happy Bodies, tells you how to stay fit and healthy after the age of fifty.
Provide flexibility and balance
Flexibility and balance are important to prevent falls and injuries. Regular stretching exercises help keep your muscles flexible, while balance exercises improve your stability. Yoga and Pilates are excellent ways to train both flexibility and balance. These sports also offer benefits for your mental well-being, such as stress reduction and improved concentration.
Focus on strength training
For whom want to maintain muscle mass – or even wants to build – is weight training 'the way to go'. Muscles play an important role in supporting your joints and maintaining good posture. In addition, strength training increases your metabolism, which helps prevent weight gain. Try to incorporate strength training into your routine each week, with exercises that target all the major muscle groups.
Start with low intensity and build up gradually
It is important not to start too fast, especially if you have not been active for a while. Start with low intensity exercises, such as to walk, swimming or yoga. These activities are friendly to you joints and help you build up your fitness in a safe way. As you get fitter, you can gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.
